Retro Candies That Bring Back Childhood Memories

Retro Candies That Bring Back Childhood Memories

Every 80s and 90s child has a sound in the back of his or her head: the crinkle of a wrapper being ripped open as he or she walks home from school. Perhaps you double-checked your coins before you shoved open the door to the corner store. Perhaps your hands went jelly, and you didn't give a shit. Perhaps you swapped some gum in exchange for some licking room candy at lunchtime back in the day.

Those small moments are larger than candy. These are the scents of an old movie theatre lobby, the blue tongues at a birthday party, and the sound of a vending machine dropping your pick with a satisfying thunk.

At Candy Confusion, we've built our whole shop around bringing those moments back. Our collection of retro candy, novelty treats, chocolate bars, gum, and sour candy is curated for exactly this kind of memory-chasing, and we ship it right across Ontario and the rest of Canada.

What Makes Candy "Retro," Anyway?

Retro candy isn't just old candy. It's candy that came with a place and a feeling attached to it.

Think about where you actually bought this stuff. The corner store with the bell on the door. The school canteen. The vending machine outside of the arena. The concession before the film began: popcorn money vs. candy money.

Many of these candies have sneaked out of your average candy store over the years. You don't realize they're gone until you find one on the web, and then you're back 11 years old, in an aisle no longer in existence.

That's the gap Candy Confusion exists to fill. As an Ontario-based online candy shop, we bring together retro candy, novelty candy, exotic imports, limited-edition treats, and ready-made candy gift boxes so you don't have to go hunting through a dozen different sites to find the stuff you actually grew up on.

Iconic Retro Candies that bring back Childhood Memories

Bazooka gum

Before apps, there were small paper comics folded into every Bazooka gum. The first bite would be chalky and hard, chewed a bit, turned into something soft and stretchy, and then you'd wrap the wrapper and put the Bazooka Joe strip in a pocket or a dozen other strips in a shoebox. If you've heard of that ritual, Bazooka Gum's still as bubblegum pink as you recall.

Big League Chew

It's the candy that got you into the dugout thinking you were a big leaguer when you first played ball, before you chewed up a fistful of shredded bubble gum rather than chewing on a stick of chew tobacco as they did on television. It was in a pouch that felt like it was in a locker, and somehow it tasted better. Big League Chew is still shredded, stuffed by the handful, and makes any backyard a ballpark!

Bottle Caps

Bottle caps were the candy you purchased to see who could make a botch of playing with it and pretend it was soda. The pop and then the chalky candy centre was half the fun and half the dare between friends. Bottle Caps still pop the same, root beer flavour, too!

Charleston Chew

A patience candy bar! You chewed your way through the nougat slowly, or you slammed the frozen bar against the edge of the table to break it into bite-sized pieces; this always became a mini sleepover event. Charleston Chew is still tasty no matter which way you go.

Everlasting Gobstoppers

All children who had a Gobstopper had a week to be scientists by taking it out of their mouths every 10 minutes to see if its colour had altered. No one completed one in one sitting – that wasn't the idea at all. Even the everlasting gobstoppers still make candy a game of patience in disguise.

Fun Dip

Instead of being a snack, candy was turned into an activity with Fun Dip. You would lick the stick, dip it in the sugar, and hope it lasted for the whole recess before your teacher even realized the powdered sugar was around your mouth. For those who seek some old-school fun with a kick, Fun Dip Sour is the experience for them to enjoy, dunking and licking but also adding a sour punch to it.

Laffy Taffy

The other half of the reason people loved to have a bite of Laffy Taffy,  was the terrible joke on the wrapper that they would read out loud to anyone close by, even to those that didn't want to listen. The other half was the chew toy that stuck in his mouth and lasted the entire route! Laffy Taffy is still made in the flavours that have been battled out on road trips.

Nik-L-Nip

If you remember taking the top off a tiny wax bottle and sucking on the sweet syrup inside like the most exciting beverage at the party and then chewing on the empty wax bottle afterwards because it felt bad to throw away, you can have Nik-L-Nip.

Every one of these has a way of pulling a very specific memory back into focus, and that's really the whole idea behind browsing the Retro Candy collection at Candy Confusion.

Then vs. Now

In the past, candy was bought with a trip to the store, a long time spent gazing at the glass lids, and a careful consideration of how much your pocket money budget could cover. You waited in line behind the first one, and you were content with whatever you chose.

Now, you can build your own nostalgia box from your couch, mix candies from three different decades in one order, and have it land on your doorstep anywhere in Ontario or across Canada. You can also hand a piece of your own childhood to your kids and watch their faces do something between confusion and delight, which might be the best part of all.

Sweet Moments Retro Candy Makes Better

It's a peculiar thing about retro candy that it can make regular gatherings feel special.

A birthday party is a great place to start a conversation when there's a bowl of Bottle Caps or Nik-L-Nip on the table.

Instead of a plain bag of chips, movie nights are more like a collection of retro and classic sours.

Game nights last longer with candy to munch on between games.

Office gifting stands out more than another mug or gift card ever could.

Holiday gifts and care packages carry a bit of home to whoever opens them.

Wedding candy tables and baby showers give guests something to smile about and talk about.

College students and long-distance friends light up over a box that tastes like a memory from home.

Candy has always been good at starting conversations. Retro candy just happens to start the best ones, the kind that begin with "Wait, do you remember this?"

Creating your own retro candy box.

Choose what decade you want to remember: the 70s, 80s, 90s, or early 2000s.

Take a chocolate bar that transports you back to the moment, such as a Charleston Chew.

Add something tart to make it more balanced.

At least one pack of gum - gum used to be a food group.

Include a gummy candy such as Laffy Taffy for the "car ride" factor.

Add a few surprises of candy you haven't had in years just to see if it has maintained its taste!

Save room for your actual childhood favourite—the one you're really doing this whole thing for.

Order it online through Candy Confusion and let the box do the surprising for you.

Why Candy Confusion Loves Retro Candy

Candy Confusion grew out of a simple idea: candy shopping shouldn't feel limited to whatever the nearest store happens to stock. Our name came from customers telling us there were just so many options that picking felt like a happy kind of confusion, and we've leaned into that ever since.

We're built around retro candy, novelty candy, and international finds you won't come across at a typical grocery store, alongside curated gift boxes and seasonal treats for whatever's coming up on the calendar. You can read more about how we got here on our About Us page, and if you're curious about the history behind some of the classics, our piece on the sweet stories behind iconic candies digs into a few more.

If You Could Taste One Memory Again

If you could taste one childhood memory again, which candy would you reach for first? The gum with the comic inside? The wax bottle you bit the top off? The chocolate bar that you had to hit a table to give to someone?

If it is, it's likely in our Retro Candy section and just waiting to be found. Make your own nostalgic box, share with someone who will remember the past as you do, and have a little part of you come through the door!
